Which 4k TV is Better for Gaming, LG or Samsung?

Gaming is one of the hottest topics all around the world at all times and gamers are always fighting and debating over which gaming peripherals i.e., mouse, keyboard, or display is the best.

Such an interesting debate is which 4k gaming Tv brand is better, LG or Samsung? The answer to it is quite elaborate and we would recommend reading this article before jumping to any conclusion.

What to know?

  • Display is one of the most essential parts of gaming. Maybe right after GPU in its importance because if you cannot see as good as your computer is performing then what good is a beast computer.
  • Companies spew out many different models of TVs. Samsung and LG both have different models of 4k TVs, each with its own pros and cons.

So, how do we compare the two brands?

We cannot just declare one brand superior to the other. Both of the two brands have different kinds of technologies in which they excel and a whole range of 4k TVs, from premium ones to budget ones.

This might put us in a kerfuffle. To solve this issue, the only way would be to choose one 4k gaming TV from each of the brand and put them together in a head-to-head contest to see which one wins.

Only then, we might be able to get an idea of which TV brand is manufacturing the better 4k gaming TV.

Battle of the Best

After thorough searching of the web, our search has brought one noble warrior from each of the two groups. Each of these two TVs is, in our opinion, the best 4k TV suitable for gaming amongst their own.

From LG we have, LG C1 OLED and from Samsung we have the Samsung QN90A QLED. All of our discussion will boil down to the specifications of these two and which one topple the other.

LG C1 vs Samsung QN90A

Before discussing various aspects of these two models of TVs from LG and Samsung, we will look at some of the shared features which both of these TVs have. These include

  • 4k resolution
  • HDR support
  • Variable Refresh Rate
  • Auto Low Latency Mode
  • HDMI 2.1
  • 120Hz Refresh Rates
  • AMD Free Sync and Nvidia G-Sync

decide which TV is better than the other when it comes to gaming. So, sit back and enjoy this comparison.

1.     Type of Technology – OLED vs QLED

The first and foremost comparison comes to what technology is being used in the TV. In LG C1, we have the OLED where the Samsung uses its propriety QLED.

OLED stands for Organic light emitting diode where QLED stands for Quantum Light emitting diode. In OLED, we have the pixels made from carbon that emit their own light.

Whereas on the other hand, QLED is basically LED with another addition layer of Quantum dot which filters the light and enhances it. The ability of pixels to emit their own light in OLED makes it possible for infinite contrast ratios.

As of now, OLED is a better technology overall than QLED, but with self-emissive QLEDs (QD-OLED) on the way, things might just change.

2.     Brightness and Reflections

The second point to discuss here is brightness and reflection. Samsung’s QN90A has an additional anti reflection layer that does not allow the reflections from other light sources to go in as hard.

Whereas LG C1 does not have something similar and thus Samsung is less reflective. Besides that, since it is an OLED panel, LG C1 cannot go as bright as the QN90A, the nits being 760 and 1860 maximum respectively.

Combine that with the reflection aspect, the QN90A is better suited for you if you game in a bright environment.

3.     Contrast and Video Technologies

This right here might be one of the most important aspects when it comes Gaming TVs. Being an OLED panel, we have an infinite contrast ratio in LG C1 giving us perfect blacks and perfect whites.

However, with QN90A by Samsung, we do not have an infinite contrast ratio, rather a 26000:1, which even though can’t match C1, is still good in itself. Samsung is also deprived of Dolby Vision.

4.     Viewing Angles

Besides putting in a layer to protect against reflections, Samsung also put in a wide viewing angle layer. However, despite this extra layer, QN90A can still not beat the viewing angles of LG C1.

The reason for this falls down the most basic of things which is the type of panel used. In QN90A we have a VA LCD panel which does not have much good viewing angles at which the contrast is not reduced. However, in OLED panels, we have a very good viewing angle with good contrast.

5.     Gaming Performance

The differences between the two TVs are subtle and none is particularly not good for gaming. The LG OLED C1 is another OLED that is ideal for gaming. LG is regarded as the gaming TV brand.

VRR and ALLM, low response times, four HDMI 2.1 ports, and 120Hz. The number of gaming experiences appears to go on forever.

The Samsung QN90A is not far behind, though. All of these gaming features are present, with the unfortunate exception of Dolby Vision Gaming.

Conclusion

There is certainly a good reason why the LG OLED C1 is the best-selling OLED of 2021. It benefits from the OLED panel, which is now the most advanced panel technology. Despite having less brightness than the Samsung QN90A, the LG OLED C1’s gaming features were more convincing.

This should not stop anyone from purchasing the Samsung QN90A, as it also is an excellent 4k gaming TV and will undoubtedly have applications where it performs better.

Use in brightly lit spaces would be one illustration. But gamers would typically prefer the LG OLED C1. This thus brings our debate to a close, showing us that as of now, LG is a better gaming TV brand than Samsung, though Samsung is just missing out by a margin.
